Data freshness
Every dot on the map has an age, and it is written next to it.
A position is not “now” just because it has only just appeared on screen. DoveBus counts the seconds since the last data received from each vehicle and always shows them. This is the real scale the product uses, not an illustration.

Two ways to ask
Either you know the line number, or you only know where you are.
Both questions lead to the same place: the list of trips, and from there the live trip. Neither of them requires knowing the other.
I am looking for a connection
Type the town you are leaving from and the one you are going to. DoveBus looks for direct trips between the two, with no changes, in the time window you give. All 273 Tuscan municipalities are in the list.
The live trip
When you follow a trip, you see everything that can be known.
- The whole route
- The road the vehicle has to take, terminus to terminus, as it stands in the official timetable — not a straight line between two points.
- The stretch already travelled
- Reconstructed along the real road. The GPS positions received fall on the published route within a few metres, so the trail follows the bends instead of cutting through the hills.
- Late, early, cancelled
- On time, +7 min, or cancelled when the operator says the trip is not running. Roughly nine trips under way out of ten carry this figure.
- How full it is
- From “empty” to “standing only”, when the vehicle declares it. Many do not, and in that case nothing is written.
- How much we are guessing
- Between one GPS fix and the next the vehicle is advanced along its route, so that it is not left standing for two minutes. A circle shows how far off that estimate could be, and the positions genuinely received stay drawn separately: the reconstruction is never confused with the observation.

What DoveBus is not.
It is not an official service
DoveBus is an independent project. It is neither run nor endorsed by Autolinee Toscane or Regione Toscana: it reads the open data that is published, and that is all. For official information about tickets, timetables and disruptions, the operator remains the place to go.
It does not see people
It sees vehicles. It does not know who is on board, it locates nobody and it never asks where you are: DoveBus does not use the browser's geolocation. The privacy page explains it in full.
It does not know about trips added at the last minute
About 3% of the trips on the road do not exist in the day's official timetable: they are services the operator added. They still appear on the map, but with fewer details — the planned route may be missing.
It does not invent a position it does not have
If a vehicle has not reported for more than five minutes it disappears from the map, and the estimate of where it would have got to stops being extended. A stationary dot that looks current is worse than no dot.
It does not plan your journey
It does not work out itineraries with changes, does not compare alternatives and does not sell tickets. It does one thing: it says where the vehicles are, now.

What is DoveBus?
An independent web map that shows where the buses in Tuscany are, using the open data published by Regione Toscana. It opens in a browser, it is not an app and it has no account.
Which lines does it cover?
The Autolinee Toscane lines present in the regional feed: around 610 town and intercity lines, touching 267 Tuscan municipalities and almost 29,000 stops. Florence and Siena alone account for about a hundred each; smaller towns often have one or two.
Do I have to install an app or sign up?
No. DoveBus works from the browser of a phone, a tablet or a computer. There is no account, no email address to leave and nothing to install — though a phone will let you add it to the home screen, if you want.
How up to date are the positions?
Regione Toscana's feed regenerates about every 120 seconds and DoveBus re-reads it every 30 seconds, so a position arrives already about two minutes old. That is why the age of the data is always written next to the vehicle instead of being hidden behind the word “live”. The full path of the data is here.
Why is a bus missing from the map?
Three possible reasons: it is not in service at that moment, it is not transmitting its position, or its last position is more than five minutes old. In that last case DoveBus removes it from the map on purpose: a vehicle drawn where it was five minutes ago is wrong information dressed up as information.
Can I follow a person who is on the bus?
No. DoveBus sees vehicles, not people: it does not know who is on board, it has no way of knowing, and it never asks for the position of whoever is using it.
Is DoveBus an official Autolinee Toscane service?
No. It is an independent, unofficial project, not affiliated with Autolinee Toscane or with Regione Toscana. All it does is read the open data that is published and draw it on a map, as the CC BY 4.0 licence expressly allows. Every source and licence is listed here.
How much does it cost?
Nothing. There are no subscriptions, no advertising, no profiling cookies and no tracking of any kind.
